Growth Hormone Releasing Hormone Efforts to identify the chemical nature of GH-releasing hormone (GHRH) from hypothalamic extracts were unsuccessful for a long time. Nevertheless, a series of clinical insights, coupled with brilliant experiments, led, in 1982, to the elucidation of the structure of GHRH isolated from the pancreatic islet tumours of two patients with the rare disease of acromegaly due to ectopic secretion of GHRH. Two different molecules have been identified, one consisting of forty-four amino acids, and the other of forty amino acids. Identical hormones have been isolated from the hypothalamus.
